SUMMERTIME TRAININGS
SUMMER TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND SECFURITY
By now, all schools have effectively shut down until late August, early September. And while many teachers and security staff pursuer secondary or part time jobs, still, I think primary, secondary and even collegiate educational systems would be well advised to encourage their staff to get involved in training programs that seek to address issues designed to address various areas of school violence.
According to James McGinty’s Guide for Preventing and Responding to School Violence, circa 2003, “Because teachers and staff establish the first line of school safety, they should be supported in creating safe classroom atmospheres. Schools should provide training and technical assistance to teachers and staff in the following areas:
· Conflict Resolution and management.
· Hostility and anger management.
· Victim sensitivity and support.
· Crisis/critical incident management.
· Bullying and harassment recognition, prevention, and intervention.
· Who should, how to, and where to refer students and families to social service agencies.
· Classroom management.
· How to identify and defuse potentially violent situations.
· How teachers’ and other staff members own behavior may diffuse or escalate conflict.
· How to identify troubles students.
· How to communicate and work with parents/guardians in order to intervene in the behavior of troubles students.
· How to most effectively work with classes that have ethnic and economic diversity.
My V.I.S.E. (Verbal Intervention Strategies in the Educational Environment) and my Disruptive Student Management Instructor Seminars, by the way, are two excellent training programs that will subsume almost all of the above categories.
Until next time, Stay Safe.
