PREVENTING AN ACTIVE KILLER (SHOOTER) EVENT IN YOUR SCHOOL

We are now well into the school year and since just this morning Homeland Security issued a serious terrorist warning, why not chat about active killers, terrorists and how to prevent

catastrophic shootings perhaps ending in untold injuries and deaths?

WARNING SIGNS (I am sure we’ve talked about this in a previous post, but, still, worth remembering).

  • The development of a personal grievance (by itself, this seems inconsequential, but tied together with the others, watch out!).
  • The acquisition of weapons.
  • Recent target practice and/or weapons training, or the recent escalation of same.
  • Recent Interest in or Fascination with explosives, guns, et al.
  • Fascination with, intense interest in previous active shooting events.
  • Real or perceived  personal loss, such as death, romantic break-up. loss of job.
  • Previous, recent arrest(s) for violent crime(s).
  • Stalking or Harassing Behavior (19%).
  • “Telling” Behavior Observed by Friends (Crucial) Including – paranoid ideation/personality changes/sharp changes in performance/changes in clothing, hygiene/disciplinary issues/Depression/Suicidal Ideation/Hopelessness/”Odd” or “Bizarre” behavior, etc.

PREPARING FOR THE ACTIVE KILLER

  • CREATE A PLAN WITH INPUT FROM STAFF, SECURITY, LOCAL POLICE & PARENTS.
  • DEVELOP A METHOD FOR REPORTING ACTIVE SHOOTER RELATED COMPLAINTS, OBSERVATIONS, ETC.
  • DEVELOP AN EVACUATION POLICY & PROCEDURE.
  • DEVELOP AN EMERGENCY ESCAPE PLAN.
  • DEVELOP A “LOCKDOWN” SYSTEM.
  • DEVELOP “SAFE HIDE ROOMS” WITH ATTENDANT TACTICAL PLANBOOK.
  • AND, FOR GOODNESS SAKES, TRAIN STAFF AND STUDENTS.  HOLD PLANNING & TRAINING SESSIONS WITH LOCAL (1ST RESPONDING) POLICE.
  • COMMIT TO SCENARIO-TRAINING SIMILAR TO FIRE DRILL TRAINING FOR STAFF & STUDENTS.

The above is far from a foolproof or complete inventory of warning signs and preventative steps, but committing you, your school, parents and police to this efforts might just be enough to\prevent a catastrophe.

Until the next post, Stay Safe.
