How About Conflict Resolution Classes?

A CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO SCHOOL VIOLENCE?

So.  What do you think about a process curriculum approach that devotes a specific time to teaching problem-solving skills in a separate course or curriculum?

These type of programs can teach students to find peaceful solutions to every type of conflict.  Students can learn how to use negotiation, mediation and consensus decision-making to find Win/Win solutions that will be positive for all parties.

At first blush, these type of programs might sound idyllic, perhaps unrealistic in some settings, but, really, what could be wrong with an approach that trains kids in conflict resolution of any kind in today’s violent and combative atmosphere?  Peer Mediation has been found to work for many, but not all problems.  But, still, the Peaceable Classroom Approach brings Conflict Resolution into core subject areas and uses these techniques to help manage the classroom, and, if I don’t miss my guess, the entire school.

Social Skills Training enables students to have positive and respectful interactions with other students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Positive relationships can reduce tendencies toward violent behavior.

Stay Safe.

  1. I am an independent artist who created a program targeting conflict resolution. I am currently researching documented data that focuses on the negative behaviors in the classroom, that fosters an unsafe environment in the school community. Can you recommend any resources that I can follow up that I can research in order to support the need for these services.

  2. I just saw this comment, Ms. Morrison. I apologize for not responding sooner. Maybe a book you might check out is “The Most Unnatural Act of All – Inside the Art of De-Escalation,” on Amazon. There are lots of books on conflict resolution, which you can find on Amazon.
    Thank you for your question.
