6th School-Based Law Enforcement Conference

I like the sound of that title – School-Based Law Enforcement Conference. The fact that officials are making a distinction between general law enforcement and law enforcement specifically for learning institutions is a good sign, isn’t it? This year, the University of Texas is holding the 6th annual School-Based Law Enforcement Conference in Corpus Christi. Slated to run from the 29th of June to the 3rd of July, the conference is aimed at helping law enforcement officers from all over Texas.

The press release is as follows:

UT Dallas Police Lt. Steve Finney and Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Dorothy Miller will present training sessions for their colleagues at the School-based Law Enforcement Conference.

Lt. Finney will present a session on conducting investigations on university campuses at the conference, set for June 29-July 3 in Corpus Christi.

Ms. Miller will present a training session on emergency preparedness tools on university campuses.
The School-Based Law Enforcement Conference offers training on school safety and security to school administrators, teachers, parents and school-based law enforcement officers.

Topics include:

• Emergency Operations Planning.
• Active Shooter Tactical Response.
• Homeland Security & Your Campus.
• Gang Awareness/Intervention.
• Dating Violence.
• Incident Command System.
• Current Drug Trends.

More than 400 law enforcement officers from across Texas are expected.

This is the conference’s sixth year. It is sponsored by The Center for Safe Communities & Schools and Texas School Safety Center, Center for Safe Communities & Schools.

Throughout the months of writing for this blog, I think that I have uncovered a trend when it comes to school safety issues. It seems to me that the state of Texas is more active when it comes to addressing school safety issues. I say this only because I run across more news items on activities initiated by officials from Texas.

Now I am not criticizing anyone here. If anything, it is a compliment to the state and its officials. This conference, though it is nothing new, is something that will help law enforcement officials become more aware of specific problems that can arise in school campuses. More so, I am hoping that the participants of the conference will actually learn practical and effective ways to handle the various situations presented in the conference outline.

One thing to note, though, even if the press release mentions the fact that the conference offers training to school administrators, teachers, parents and school-based law enforcement officers, it seems that this particular conference is for law enforcement officers only. I wonder if the other individuals mentioned can also attend the conference? And what if you’re from a neighboring state? Would it be possible to participate as well?

  1. Just an FYI:
I am a former employee of the Texas School SAfety Center and want to point out that it is not the University of Texas holding this conference, but they are only presenting at it. The Texas School Safety Center puts this conference together yearly and even though it focuses on school based law enforcement, there are usually around 30% school administrators in attendence. The center also sponsors the Texas School Administrator Safety Conference (TSAS) in November of each year. Not sure why UT Dallas’s press release is so misleading……
    THanks!

  2. Thank you for the information, Catherine!
