1 Second 1 Life: School Bus Safety In Focus
It has not been a month that I wrote a post on that little boy who got killed when he crossed the street in front of a school bus. Though we might not hear about these kinds of incidents every day, it happens quite often. For the families and friends of these children, it happens one time too often.
And while we cannot really place all the blame on the school bus drivers (who ought to know better than to drop children off far from the curb), they cannot really all take the responsibility as well. Parents and guardians should also ensure that the children under their care practice safety habits that will keep them away from danger.
This is where the 1 Second 1 Life comes in. It is the web site of an initiative called BUS STOP! – Road Safety Initiative For Children In Aberdeenshire Schools. Obviously based in the UK, the initiative is aimed to help inform students in primary and secondary schools. It is also supported by other organizations such as North Sea oil and gas operator Talisman Energy (UK) Ltd and the Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen city councils.
They have released short movie clips that will hopefully open the eyes and minds of the people involved – parents, children, and the rest of the community – to the dangers of not being careful on the road. One story that is being featured is that of Robyn Oldham’s. She was 15 when she was hit by a car in September of last year. She passed away due to the accident. Her parents are fully supporting the initiative in the hopes that other people will be able to avoid a similar experience. BBC has this story:
The DVD and education pack have been launched by North Sea oil and gas operator Talisman Energy (UK) Ltd in conjunction with Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen city councils.
Mrs Oldham said: “We had gone to the garden centre and next thing we got a call. Nothing could have prepared me for seeing her laid there.
“A car hit her, she was all but gone at the scene.”
She urged children: “Stop and think, just take a second please, take care, I would not want this to happen to anyone else.” Two weeks after Robyn’s death, Fraserburgh Academy pupil Alexander Milne died after he was hit by a car just outside his home.
You can find the information on the 1 Second 1 Life web site. And while the campaign is targeting a UK audience, I am quite sure that Americans will find it moving and useful as well. You should see the clips for yourself and you’ll realize what I am talking about.
